Philip Graham Mark Deutsch plays here the bazantar, a 31 string stand-up acoustic bass he invented. Its sonic landscape combines the power of a bass, the keening of a cello, the liquid plucked tones of a sarod, and the drone-like atmospherics of a tanpura. Together, these aural possibilities create a remarkable meditative music that keeps your mind on its toes. Favorite track: Azure Tilt.

about

“Questions of Prescience”, the second album of “The Picasso Tunings”, evolves out of “Four Sisters”. Its compositions take alternate tunings and the use of harmonics to previously unknown realms. The scales or “ragas” used here have also transformed from the familiar and European to the exotic and otherworldly. It’s compositions are more intricate and vast in concept, incorporating classical music constructs both Eastern and Western. These works, particularly “Antique Slippers”, the most expansive of “The Picasso Tunings”, are submersive in their intent, allowing the listener to descend into an alternate reality of lush harmonics, poignant sympathetics and exotic timeless visions both ancient and of the future.
